1746 Dated Powder Horn with Doghead Applied End

$259.00Price

This one of three powder horns that I am listing in this update out of a grouping of seven horns. These are all from the same 35+ year old collection and is as such 'fresh to the market'. All of them have a quirk or design or are dated or have initials on them. This horn has the date '1746' on its large endpiece and is at least 273 years old. It would have been made around the time of the French and Indian War so it is a true survivor. It is also unique in that it has a 'doghead' attachment on the smaller, pouring end that was where the carrying strap was attached. This doghead attachment is quite rare and showed the craftsmanship of its owner. Another unique thing about these powder horns is that they were positioned so the carrying strap could be placed so the curve of the horn would wrap around the owner's waist for ease of carry and quick use. When you see horns like these with that curve, you will know whether the owner was left or right handed when using their muskets. It is 12" long.
