1804 Vermont Sheriff's Summons for Overdue Payment by a Jonathan Bayley to a Reu
An 1804 Vermont summons for non-payment of a promissory note from Jonathan Bayley to Reuben Bamfell. These early summons and writs are interesting as it shows life of the 'common' man. This summons was signed by Thomas Chamberlain, 'who was considered a man of high standing in the community in Newbury' and served in the Revolutionary War. The Bayley family was also a well-known family in Vermont and were well-known to the Chamberlain family that was one of the first settlers in Vermont. Early Vermont ephemera is hard to find and rarely for sale so this is a nice piece of Vermont history.
This summons is 6.5" x 8".
