It's not often that the people in mid 1800's ambrotypes can be identified but this set of ambrotypes came with a card with the name, location, and business (Southport sloops) written on it. This wonderful double ambrotype shows Mr Seth Wakeman and his wife in their later years. Seth was the brother of Zalmon Wakeman and worked in the family business, Wakeman, Dimon & Co., which was a shipping company out of Southport, CT. During the Civil War, Wakeman, Dimon & Co.’s vessels were commissioned by the federal government to transport equipment and troops for the Union Army. This was a local company run by a family that were descendents of one of the original settlers of the area. Each ambrotype is 2" x 2.5".
