Early 19th Century American Religious Sampler Dated 1820
This is an early 19th century American made sampler that is full of religious symbolism. It is dated 1820 and has the young stitcher's initials 'J S H' displayed inside a small rectangle to the left of the large blue cross in the center of the sampler. At the bottom of the sampler there is a reliquary starting at the left, a large iron cross in a basket of flowers that may be a funeral arrangement or a sympathy message, a possible flower arrangement, a two handled chalice, a large chalise, and a dove in a tree.
The alphabet is cross-stitched across the top of the sampler along with numbers and the date '1820' is in that line of numbers. I've never seen a sampler like this one that has so many religious symbols and so beautifully stitched. Found in Dauphin County, PA, it would make a wonderful addition to your sampler collection.
It is beautifully framed in a modern faux painted frame that does a very good job of accenting the sampler.
It measures 13" x 17".
