Bleeder or Fleam in Original Small Case - "Be Careful" - Civil War Era
An antique bleeder or fleam in its original small case that has 'BE CAREFUL' written on the top of the case. The bottom of the case is covered in marblized paper. These bleeders were used by Civil War surgeons until about 1863 to 'bleed' a small vein, usually in the neck, to help with healing by releasing 'bad blood'. Many Civil War surgeons used bloodletting to treat a wounded or ill soldier, usually because they had no other answer for treating their patients. This practice, that never benefited the patient actually did more harm by causing infection and the practice of bloodletting started to decline by 1863.
