Circa 1800 Wax Jack with Intact Wax Rope
An early wax jack with an original rope of beeswax still wound around the horizontal spindle. There is dust on the wax that I did not remove as it might harm the wax. Wax jacks were used for melted sealing wax to seal documents and letters or to add a seal to a land deed or other document. Being in such excellent condition, I would assume that the spindle still turns easily but I have not tried to turn ir or otherwise move it.
