Civil War Veteran's Leather Document Box - Descendant of Cornelius Van Ness

Civil War Veteran's Leather Document Box - Descendant of Cornelius Van Ness

This is a wonderful late 18th - early 19th century leather document box that has an amazing stud decoration on the front. it's leather hinges are intact as is its original interior covering and leather trim around the bottom of the top of the box. The trim is intact but partly folded up due to over 100 years of storage. The only things holding the box together (from the time it was made) are the leather hinges and the leather covering on the back of the box, so it is a fragile connection. The lock box hasp is missing but the most important part of this box is a small leather square with the signature and hometown of Edgar P. Ladd on its right side. Private Ladd was only 19 when he was mustered out of the Union Army on November 16, 1865 after being held as a POW by the Confederate Army. He was a member of the NY 1st Regiment of Mounted Rifles and was captured near Warsaw, VA while on scout and was released on March 26, 1865. He enlisted on December 16, 1863 at the age of 18 and was a butcher before joining the army. His physical description is included: he had gray eyes, brown hair, a dark complexion, and was 5' 9.5" tall.

He was also a descendant of Cornelius Garret Van Ness (1726-1791), a descendant of the family named as one of the grantees in the patent for the Hoosick Valley in NY State. Cornelius was first a private in the Van Schaick's Battalion when he enlisted on February 16, 1776, by 1777 he was a private in the Van Cortlandt Regiment of NY and he can still be found on the muster rolls in late 1782.

Edgar came from a long line of military men and to have his signature on the side of this document box makes it even more precious as the box was probably handed down from his military ancestors.

It is 12" long x 6" deep x 6.5" tall to the top of the dome. Layaway is available on this box. Please use the 'add a note' feature in your shopping cart to let me know you want to use that option and use the 'manual payment' option to hold the item until I contact you.
