An original early daguerreotype of a young ship's captain or maybe a ship owner. His case has a schooner on each side and the case is covered in a velvet cover. The ship is easy to see and there is other interesting designs on the case. There is something over the young man's back right shoulder that looks like a demijohn wine bottle so maybe he is part of a wine merchants family and they own their own fleet of ships? There are so many stories and backgrounds that can be surmised to account for the richness of his clothing and that ship on the front and back of the case.
