Large German Composition Bison or Buffalo
A (3" tall x 4.25" long) German composition bison that is sometimes called a buffalo. This is a very good likeness to a real bison even though the people in the small German village that was making this bison had probably only seen one in a book. It is circa 1910 and was made when paper was formed over a stick 'body' and then, when dry, the figure was dipped in a liquidy gesso material until several layers were formed and the sheep or other animal could be carved or formed into sheep, cows, pigs, etc and then painted. Wood legs were added and a little putz animal was formed.
